The E-Type needs no introduction. A beautiful sports car, perfectly designed and iconic with its long hood, low stance and curvaceous lines. The legendary straight-six XK engine provides an un-paralleled driving experience.
We are delighted to bring this E-Type to market, an opportunity to purchase a stunning Series 2 E-Type.
History and paperwork
First registered 1st January 1969
First registered on the UK 1st October 2017
Splined Hub were commissioned to inspect the car pre-purchase
Purchased by vendor after report received
Almost immediately decided to complete a comprehensive rebuild and repaint
Handful of invoices and MOTs
Original Jaguar Workshop Manual
66,362 Mileage (64k at import)
Originally dispatched to New York on the 4th of December 1968, as were many others back in the 60s and 70s, and, like many it was repatriated to the UK just under 50 years later. That moves us on to its UK life.
We start with that age old story; our vendor, having purchased a second hand 1966 Jaguar E-Type back in 1969, had a nagging urge to scratch that itch once more. After seeing this one come up for sale in October 2017, he commissioned his local, and very well respected, Jaguar E-Type Specialist “The Splined Hub” to go and view the car on his behalf.
Their report was exactly what he wanted to hear, a good solid car that looked to have no issues whatsoever. It sounded perfect for what our vendor had in store; we will come to that below.
Outside
Professional repaint in its original Signal Red
Engine out and side frames and bulkhead repainted
Tremendous condition underneath.
Tremendous condition outside with only 2000 miles travelled
Tremendous tan roof
The Splined Hub were commissioned to carry out the full repaint, including the bulkhead and engine side frames which were black. Obviously, also giving the E-Type a good once over before putting it all back together. The invoice for £23k is in the paperwork folder that will come with the car.
The brightwork is in great condition with the bumpers showing a small amount of pitting. The wheels look lovely and bright and can been seen in the images with the red sidewall banded types.
The tan hood looks great with a nice clear rear screen and the underneath is lovely and tidy with those stainless-steel rear pipes and the immensely clean overhauled rear IRS and axle.
Inside
Outstanding condition interior
Seats retrimmed in black leather
Carpets in excellent order
Switchgear and dials working as expected
The interior condition of this fabulous E-Type is incredible. The upholstery has been fully retrimmed and the black leather seats look splendid. The £1600 cost can be seen on the Splined Hub invoice.
Steering wheel, dashboard, carpets, headlining, etc are all in wonderful condition. At a push we would say the only real blemish for a car of this age is that the clock has stopped working, very likely an easy fix.
There are no modifications to the inside of this E-Type other than the retro modern stereo unit that has phone connectivity.
Mechanicals
Converted to RHD by Splined Hub
The engine runs perfectly
Twin rear exhaust system with chrome tailpipes
Drives beautifully.
Rear IRS overhauled
Gaz adjustable shocks
Inboard brakes renewed at the same time
New brake master cylinder
Wishbones refurbed and nickel plated
A brand new electronic ignition distributor along with again a brand new compatible coil have been recently fitted
The E-Type is very usable. The 4.2 litre engine mated to a manual box is considered by many connoisseurs to be the very best combination. The fantastically strong 4.2 litre engine runs with no problems. The engine has been serviced regularly by our vendor who has had previous roles at Armstrong Sidley, Bristol and his most recent role as an Auto and Aero Engineer. We suspect he knows his stuff.
As can been seen in the images the rear IRS and axle etc have been completely overhauled with inboard brakes, new Gaz adjustable shocks and a good dose of powder coating where needed. He even went to the trouble of nickel plating the wishbones, all can be seen in the image gallery. Another £3000 bill.
