Chassis No 1S50591

This superb S3 V12 E-type has been In its current ownership for the last 22 years and was, in 1992, the subject of a £60,000 restoration . The car was also equipped with fuel injection and converted into a Roadster by Southern Classics in 1994. The car has covered just 29,000 miles since this conversion and comprehensive restoration.

Described as being in 'Class A' condition, the car started readily and ran extremely well during our recent inspection and road test. The car benefits from a stainless steel exhaust system with the headers wrapped in heat-resistant tape. Special air filters are used and the general appearance of the engine bay is very good and nicely detailed. The vendor states that the car is fitted with a Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox and 2.88-1 final drive which makes for effortless cruising. The engine 'ticks over' at just 1,900 rpm at 70 mph, due to the 'overdrive' 5th gear and long gearing.

Finished in bright silver and sitting on sparkling chrome wire wheels shod with Michelin tyres, the condition of the bodywork and paint are excellent throughout and special 'Fuel Injection' badging features on the boot. The interior is equipped with sports seats, which are trimmed in blue leather with a walnut dashboard and a quick release Momo steering wheel. The hood and tonneau cover are dark blue to match the seats and they are again in first-class order.

The icing on the cake with this car is it highly appropriate and valuable registration number 53 CAT, (what else for a 5.3 litre Jaguar?!) making it a well-recognised car in Jaguar circles. The car has also featured in various publications including Jaguar World and Jaguar Enthusiast Club magazines.

With a genuine 29,000 miles being recorded since being restored, this superb E-Type comes with a wealth of MOT certificates and documentation, which includes road tests and articles in various magazines, which make for interesting reading. While the purist would not give £70,000 for this car (It was recently valued, by the JEC, at £80,000 for insurance purposes) this outstanding E-type offers the sporting driver all the things that the original car never had. The fuel injection makes it very responsive to the throttle, the five speed box gives lively performance in the lower gears, the sports seats give great support and the high gearing make cruising a pleasure and relatively economical.

If you are looking for a great driving E-Type, this example fits the bill nicely.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
