This vehicle is presently being sold by a vendor called classic and sportscar ltd UK. The build plate states that it is FHC chassis No: 860214. The engine number is R3894-9. I have seen the vehicle and can confirm that both these items are correct. However, the chassis number is not imprinted on the frame at the front of the vehilce. The registration number is 228 AWR. It is presented in Dark metallic red with a black leather interior.

It has an up-graded 4 speed synchromesh gearbox and it has had series one 4.2L seats put in it.

The interior is not period specific in that the previous owner who restored it in the 1990's did not maintain the aluminium dash, instead fitting a leather one with arm rest.

The information offered by the vendor is that the vehicle was built in May 1962 and came from Jaguar Leeds and was sold new to Ross Brothers Limited of Ilkley. A heritage certificate is with the vendor.

The car has covered approximately 70,000 miles to date.

This car would be best bought by an enthusiast who could restore it as the paint amongst many other things need doing.

I hope this is of help.

Sold by the Classic and Sports Car Centre of Malton in November 2024. Abbreviated seller's description below.

We've known this subtly upgraded E Type for over 17 years and over this time have supplied the car 3 times. This fantastic older restoration is an exceptional driver and presents especially well. This UK home market car was manufactured on 2nd February 1962 and Jaguar Distributors Leeds supplied the E Type to Ross Brothers of Ilkley and it was registered with West Yorkshire registration mark 228AWR. The E Type was supplied to a company in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and we have the Heritage Certificate confirming the details.

It was fully rebuilt from May 1990 to April 1991 and a photo record and log was kept detailing 1200 hours of labour. It was taken back to the bare shell and built up with Martin Robey body panels. The impressive total body restoration was matched by a full mechanical overhaul to include engine and gearbox rebuild. Various upgrades include Coopercraft brakes, stainless steel exhaust system and manifolds and later all synchromesh Jaguar gearbox.

228AWR presents well throughout and is a strong, honest and usable example. The bodywork and paint are still sharp, the chrome work is bright and underneath is still in body colour and presents superbly. The interior is beautifully presented. In 2022 re-trimmed seats and trim improvements were made. At the same time the car had a major service and mechanical re-commissioning after years of little use. Works included new brakes, rear discs, brake master cylinder, clutch and slave cylinders, steering rack mountings and half shaft universal joints.

Further improvements include lumination coil plugs and leads, new engine mountings and new chrome wire wheels. The E Type now records 77500 miles with the last owner covering 2500 miles in the past 11 years. Whilst the mileage is not guaranteed MoT certificates go back to 1977 when the mileage was 60342. This is a subtly upgraded car with exceptional performance.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
