Auction description:

RM Sotheby's - Shift Online: Europe & Middle East

1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8-Litre Fixed Head Coupé Competition Add to Favorites

Chassis No. 861049

Cylinder Head No. R9518-9

Registration UK V5C

Location Chobham, United Kingdom

£170,000 - £200,000 GBP

Built in December 1962, this right-hand-drive E-Type was originally delivered via Cycle & Carriage in Singapore. According to the accompanying copy of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate issued in October 2013, chassis number 861049 was configured in Red over Cream hide. While the Jaguar’s earlier history is not known, it was registered as “XJI 787” in the United Kingdom from 2000. Painted dark green, the car spent time near Brighton and, from 2011, in the “Motorsport Valley” region around Silverstone, appearing at the Sunday Scramble at Bicester Heritage.

Acquired by a new owner in October 2017, the Jaguar was subsequently transformed into an FIA Appendix K (period-correct specification) historic race car by E-Type specialist Valley Motorsport of Shropshire. Presented in Old English White over Black trim, a competition debut for “XJI 787” came in the Castle Combe Autumn Classic national meeting in October 2020. Contesting the Norman Dewis Trophy for pre-1966 Jaguars, a race named in honour of the marque’s legendary test driver, accomplished GT and historic racer Alex Buncombe converted pole position into an utterly dominant maiden victory.

The E-Type returned to the track for the Silverstone Classic in the summer of 2021. In the 60th Anniversary E-Type Challenge bout, Buncombe claimed a class win in 13th. The car was then invited to enter September’s Goodwood Revival. In the Friday twilight Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy race for pre-1963 closed-cockpit GT cars—an event often credited with assembling the most valuable entry list in club motorsport—Buncombe was partnered by long-time friend Jenson Button. The 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, needing to adapt to the quirks of old-timer racing for his Goodwood Motor Circuit debut, qualified 19th on the star-studded grid. But he and Buncombe brilliantly battled back to a fine 7th place as the third-ranked E-Type.

Later purchased by the consigning owner, the E-Type has been maintained by CKL Developments of East Sussex. Three further races have followed, including a return to the Silverstone Classic in 2022. Complemented by an FIA Historic Technical Passport (available to view on file) issued in 2020, the Jaguar’s 3,868-cc straight-six has been certified in accordance with Motorsport UK guidelines. The car is also road legal in the UK.

A proven competitive race car that has been driven by an F1 World Champion, this Jaguar E-Type is eligible for some of the most prestigious meetings on the historic racing calendar.

The Appeal

Even without this car’s provenance, which we’ll get to soon, this is one hugely tempting early E-Type. Classically finished in Old English White and meticulously built to FIA Appendix K Historic Race specification by Valley Motorsport, it is as beautiful as it is capable.

What elevates it, of course, is its racing history and notable keepers. It is an original 1962-built RHD FHC that was rebuilt over three years between 2017 and 2020 for well known collector and racer Bob Neville, owner of RJN Motorsport. Valley Motorsport is one of the most respected historic race car builders in the UK, and, naturally, this restoration coveted every aspect of the car. The build list is detailed in the photos and runs to many, many pages including a full engine rebuild and bore out to 3,868cc.

The car hit the track at Castle Combe in 2020, taking pole and a class win in its first race. It has gone on to achieve similar at Silverstone in 2021 before placing well in the Goodwood Revival Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy of the same year. It was piloted in that race by Formula One World Champion Jenson Button.

In recent years it has been maintained by CKL Developments and raced sparingly but at notable events. You can read about its historic highlights below. It comes to market with current FIA Historic documentation valid until 2030 and a vast history file documenting the restoration work, servicing, maintenance and racing history.

This is a road-registered E-Type race car with the sort of specification and provenance that it is exceptionally difficult to find or replicate. Driven by an F1 World Champion, this Jaguar E-Type offers a fantastic prospect for the most discerning collectors. UK road registered.

The vendor says:

“Absolutely thrilling!!! A very competitive Racecar for Historic Motorsport... fully FIA compliant also. It is perfect for Revival, Silverstone Classics, Le Mans Classics and all other Historic Racing events."

The Condition

Finished in Old English White with black interior

Restored and finished to very high standard by Valley Motorsport

Race-prepared interior stripped for optimum racing performance

Fitted with FIA-compliant roll cage

Tillet carbon seat with racing harnesses

Much of the appeal of the remarkable race car is that it retains the evocative Series 1 aesthetics without compromising its track potential. Aside from lowered suspension, racing tyres and adapted bonnet with exterior handles, this car looks to all intents like a standard 1963 car.

Inside things are a little more evolved thanks to the requirements of FIA certification. The interior has been stripped and is fitted with a roll cage, quality Tillet carbon fibre seat and racing harnesses. There is a Stack rev counter amidst the standard factory dials.

The Mechanics

XK engine bored out and rebuilt to 3,868cc by Valley Motorsport

Triple SU carburettors in well presented engine bay

4-speed manual transmission

Meticulously tuned by Valley Motorsport for competitive performance

Upgraded suspension and brakes for optimal track performance

The vendor reports all mechanical components are in very good order

Built and maintained for racing performance by Valley Motorsport and CKL Developments

FIA compliant for historic motorsport event

Race-winning and highly competitive car

With this provenance you can be assured that the specification and build had exceptionally high standards. But you don’t have to assume that - this car’s history file, highlights of which we have replicated in the photos, confirms the depth of the attention to detail.

Then there is the results. From its debut race at Castle Combe, this car proved it was a race winner, achieving both podium and class win on that maiden outing. It has gone on to continue that success.

It is, however, the car’s association with F1 champion Jenson Button along with its impressive results that most firmly attests to this car’s capability.

Since completion in 2020 the car has been in the hands of high end collectors, including its current keeper.

This is a hugely impressive car with a great specification, provenance and maintenance.
