This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a Series I flat-floor roadster that was purchased in California by the seller in 1982 and is powered by a 1966-manufactured 4.2-liter inline-six mated to a 1968-spec synchronized four-speed manual transmission. Other modifications include Series II brakes, a replacement front frame, an aluminum radiator, an auxiliary electric cooling fan, a Delco one-wire alternator, a Mallory distributor, and PerTronix ignition. Finished in red with a black soft top over black leather upholstery, the car also features a limited-slip differential, triple SU carburetors, enclosed headlights, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a Kenwood cassette stereo. This modified XKE is now offered with service records, old photos, the removed front frame section, spare and removed parts, blue California license plates, and a California title in the seller’s name.
In 1982, there was accident damage behind the left-front wheel and on the hood. The clamshell hood, adjacent left-side bodywork, and battery-box area were subsequently replaced.
The car was stripped and repainted in Carmen Red in 2023, the seller tells us, at which point prior accident damage near the right-rear corner was repaired with replacement metal. The black soft top was replaced in 2024. Additional exterior equipment includes enclosed headlights, dual side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, a reverse light, bright trim, wraparound chrome bumpers, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller notes chips in the paint and that the passenger-side door is difficult to close.
The front frame was replaced in 2016 with components sourced from XKs Unlimited to address fatigue cracks near the engine mounts. The frame section was restamped with the car’s chassis number.
Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels secured by two-eared knock-offs are mounted with Sumitomo HTR200 tires measuring 205/70. The four-wheel-disc braking system was updated to Series II specifications in the front and sleeved calipers at the rear in 1999 by Jaguar Unlimited of Los Gatos, California, which performed much of the work that occurred under the seller’s stewardship. The wheels, splines, and bearings have been replaced under current ownership, as have the suspension bushings, with polyurethane installed at the front suspension.
The cabin was refurbished in the 1980s and features bucket seats upholstered in black leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpeting. Appointments include textured-aluminum dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, a Kenwood AM/FM/cassette stereo, and Infinity speakers. The heater tubes have been replaced with stainless-steel units. Electrical work was conducted by Jaguar Unlimited during the 1990s.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and voltage are located at the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 78k miles, approximately 40k of which were added under current ownership.
A 4.2-liter inline-six sourced from a 1966 XKE was rebuilt and installed in this car prior to 1982, according to the seller. The engine is complemented by the following components:
Triple SU carburetors
Replacement oil pump and bearings
Aluminum radiator and header tank
3,000-cfm auxiliary electric cooling fan
Delco one-wire alternator
Mallory distributor
PerTronix electronic ignition
Replacement water pump
Replacement fuel tank
The seller states that the car’s prior owner totaled their 1966 XKE but was able to save the engine and install it in this car, which had a blown engine at the time.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission that is said to have originated in a 1968 XKE. The clutch was replaced and the transmission and differential were resealed in the late 1990s.
An assortment of service records from current ownership is included in the sale.
A 1962-date-stamped XKE 3.8-liter engine block with the serial number R9775-9 will accompany the vehicle along with an assortment of spare parts that are pictured in the gallery. Among the parts collection is a 3.8-liter crankshaft, a cylinder head from a 4.2-liter Jaguar XJ, the aforementioned removed front frame.
The chassis number is 875603, whereas the California title adds a “J62” prefix and notes that the title is a duplicate document.
