This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a flat-floor, left-hand-drive Series I coupe that was purchased new through Brentwood Motors in California and stayed with its original owner, a founder of the Orange County XKE Club, for nearly four decades. Under his stewardship, the four-speed manual transmission was replaced with a fully synchronized unit, and the car underwent a color change from Cream to yellow. Chassis 885438 was purchased from his estate by the current owner in 2000, and a multi-year refurbishment was initiated in 2016. The body was stripped to bare metal before a repaint in Ferrari Argento Nurburgring Metallic, the brightwork was refinished, the suspension and brakes were overhauled, and the 3.8-liter inline-six was rebuilt along with the transmission and limited-slip differential. British European Auto of Los Angeles reupholstered the interior in black leather and also handled final assembly and tuning. This XKE coupe is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a tool roll, literature, spare parts, initial purchase documents, service records, and a clean California title.

Chassis 885438 left the factory finished in Cream over red leather, and the color scheme was changed to yellow over black under prior ownership. The car was disassembled during the aforementioned refurbishment, and the body was stripped to bare metal. Rust is said to have been limited to the cargo area drain hole.

Ferrari Argento Nurburgring Metallic (101C) was selected for the repaint, which was carried out in 2018 by Mark Oja of Custom Rod Garage in Huntington Beach. Exterior brightwork was also refinished. Details include stamped hood louvers, wraparound bumpers with guards, a bullet-style side mirror, and central exhaust outlets.

The chrome 15×5” 72-spoke knock-off wire wheels were replaced along with the two-eared spinners and 185/80 Dunlop Classic Sport tires. A matching spare is stored in the cargo area. The front subframe and control arms were powder-coated, the ball joints and bushings were replaced, and GAZ adjustable shocks were installed. The brake calipers and rotors were also replaced, and stainless-steel hard lines were used.

The cabin was re-trimmed in black leather at British European Auto of Los Angeles using a Moss Motors upholstery kit along with a headliner and sun visors sourced from Lakewell Classic Car Interiors in Belgium. Patterned aluminum trim adorns the center stack and console, and the Blaupunkt push-button AM/FM radio was refurbished at Vintage Radio.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths gauges that were refreshed by Nisonger Instruments. A 160-mph speedometer is accompanied by a tachometer with an inset clock, while auxiliary gauges are located in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 24k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six and triple SU carburetors were rebuilt at JP’s European Auto in Huntington Beach, and Mahle pistons were installed. A stainless-steel exhaust system was added along with an aluminum radiator and a larger cooling fan, and the wiring harness was replaced. The seller notes that the car has been driven approximately 20 miles since the rebuild was completed, and the engine is still within the break-in period.

The engine block stamping corresponds to the number is listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission that was sourced from a 1970 model and installed c.1975. The gearbox was rebuilt at JP’s European Auto, while the rear axle and limited-slip differential were overhauled by J&S Gear of Huntington Beach. The rear subframe was powder-coated in gloss black, and the fuel tank was resealed and powder-coated as well.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was dispatched on January 17, 1962, for the North American export market and lists factory equipment and identification numbers.

A tool roll will accompany the car along with California black license plates, literature, extra paint, and spare parts.

The sequence J62 appears on a tag beside the chassis plate and precedes the chassis number in the VIN listed on the California title.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
