Seller's description:
1970 Jaguar E-Type 1970 JAGUAR XKE 2+2 E-TYPE. Condition is "Used". Pristine Barn-find Silver XKE on Factory wheels - WOW!
1969 XKE, sold and titled in 1970 is absolutely intriguing. This was a period restomod that was built by a Jaguar enthusiast in the late 70's in California's Central Valley. He purchased a rust free XKE with the express purpose of building his no expense spared dream car. From what I know of him, he saw himself as a Carol Shelby type privateer, who dreamed of building a car with the breathtaking styling that the XKE had with a lighter, more powerful engine and improved handling. At the time, the Shelby Cobra, Alpine Tiger, Facel Vega and the Italian ISO were doing the same thing - using beautiful European bodies and supple suspension with agile, light and dependable American v8's
To be fair, many Jaguar owners have done a motor swap to American v8's in the past. What is unique about this is that the owner embarked on this project, not from a cost cutting perspective or inability to service and repair the usual Jaguar power plant. His collection includes other show quality Jaguar restorations that are completely stock and perfect. On this one he was making a performance oriented drivers car for himself. Here is what I know about it:
Rust free, dent free body shell
Ford 302 v8 - custom headers, offenhauser intake, 4 barrel carb, custom camshaft producing 300+ hp
Auto Trans - C4
Black on black interior in as new condition expect one quarter size blemish on driver seat - even smells clean and new
There is some road rash on one of the rear rims, but they appear to be straight and true.
Paint has lost some luster, a few chips on doors, and one section about 2 inches long of lifting paint next to chrome trim on right front fender.
Evidence of a ding repair on rear hatch - corrected and primered.
Exhaust is all tight and rust free
No evidence of corrosion on rockers, door bottoms, rear hatch, or spare tire compartment.
Car has factory power steering and factory installed Air conditioning (will need repair) but all there
Tires are good enough for rolling on trailer, but must be replaced.
Current Condition:
Driven regularly for over 10 years before going into storage
Has not been driven since 1988
Kept in warehouse since it was acquired in late 70's
Motor Turns over by hand
Wipers, indicator lights, and accessories worked on jumper cables - starter did not turn
AC belt was removed, but York compressor turns freely.
Summary
Top notch period restomod that will need revival service to get running. Please expect to change all necessary rubber hoses, belts and fluids. WE HAVE NOT STARTED OR DRIVEN THIS CAR - BID ACCORDINGLY. This is top quality barnfind in that there is no obvious rust and has solid history of care and use up until it was stored dry when the owners health began to fail. Miles ahead of of a period project car, but a few miles to go to make it roar again.
I have seen the car in person and made these observations to help bidders get a picture of what this car is all about, and to help the families' estate find a capable and responsible buyer of a project car that has been in storage since 1988.
