I was told this car was restored in the late '80s and displayed as one of several the gentleman had in his collection. In the early '90s, it was sold to the man I purchased it from. He had returned it to the road briefly in the early '90s and drove it for a year or two. When I purchased it had been sitting occasional run, but not driven, in his garage. It had a PA inspection sticker on the windshield from 1992. I had been specifically looking for a '65-67 FHC and like this one because the body was "rust-free" and everything appeared intact.

Since owning the car, I've worked on some of the electrical items and had it professional serviced with the goal of becoming a safe driver again. It is currently PA inspected which mean all safety related items are in good condition. It required master brake and clutch cylinders, tires, belts, hoses, electrical, exhaust pipes, etc.. My mechanic selected the items he believed needed replacement like: tires (new red line Michelins), brake and clutch cylinders, fuel pump, battery, etc., but found several items which appeared to have been replaced previously and had little wear (from the restoration?).

The car is not perfect. Today I realized the after-market radio must have been connected to some unmounted speakers in the rear hatch area (long gone). The original type speakers are still mounted on the sides of the radio, but they are not wired in. As I mentioned before, my mechanic must of seen interior dash lights for the inspection, but I can't. The interior appears to have been recovered at some point and some of the recovering material's edges need to be re-tucked and glued (see rear hatch interior photo & dash). The carpets must of been replaced also. I pulled the passenger side one up to photo the floor pan and had to peel the felt underliner off the metal floor pan. There is one small rip in the leather on the rear deck (see deck photos). The seats are great, but could use some polish.

Body condition - Rust ... I don't know how to answer all the questions I received about rust other than to say "this is a 38 year old automobile". It has had rust, it does have rust and I assume it will always have rust. However, I purchased it because to me it looked relatively "rust free". I assume from what I have seen since owning the car that it had rusted prior to the '80s restoration and at that time they took measures to halt and prevent future rust. If you look carefully at the underhood and headlight photos you can see small areas where it appears to have rusted through before they sealed it with the black tar paint stuff. In looking at the floor pans, I suspect they are original, did have a small amount of rust, and were sealed in goop in the '80s. The boot pan definitely looks original and you can see some old rust damage on the pan floor rails. The previous owner and I used a magnet test and concluded there was no filler, however my mechanic thinks the front and back edge of the rocker panels may have been worked on. The bonnet does not appear to have ever been dented. Please keep in mind that this car has spent most of the last 20 years as a garage ornament.

The paint is Red and appears to be a repaint. There is a bubble/crack on the hood and several chips/marks (see pictures for worst case examples).

The car does leak oil, a few drops every time you run it (as a new British friend taught me, this small oil leak is an undocumented enhancement built into the car to help protect the underbody from rust (that's a joke)). It appears to be leaking from around the head gasket. I haven't noticed any leakage from the trans or rear.

The car drives well. Transmission is smooth - all synchromesh are working and the rear seems solid. The engine blows a little black smoke (which the mechanic thinks is related to the too rich carb setup) but it still has runs very strong.

For you matching number fans, here are the numbers the previous owner gave me. If it is vital, you are a bidder, and you can explain where to look on the car, I'll try to confirm whatever matches whatever. What I have is:

In summary, the car appears to have been restored to some extent 15+ years ago. I'm not knowledgeable enough to judge either the original workmanship or lasting value. It has however helped preserve this work of art for another generation. It could be stripped down to bare metal an completely redone or it could be driven as-is for years to come.

This beautiful Jaguar shows no rust and it is absolutely striking in appearance. This car has not been "over restored" and it is not a concourse car or a museum piece. This is a great example of a gorgeous car that you will not be afraid to drive and enjoy daily.

This is a numbers matching Jaguar (the engine block matches the #s on the ID plate). The mileage on the odometer of approximately 91,500 is believed to be original. The engine runs strong but it does puff a bit of smoke. A compression test was done on the car recently and it showed 5 of the 6 cylinders at around 140 lbs/sq inch and the other at around 100. The car is very fast (for a stock 1967 automobile) and the engine can still put you back in your seat. The oil pressure remains high and it is responsive to the RPM's of the motor. There is video of the oil pressure gauge responding to a fun and speedy test drive.

I purchased the car in November of 2007. It's back in Pennsylvania where this log began! I haven't seen much of the car since it arrived because shortly after receiving it I transported it to Jim Boffo in New Brighton, PA (highly recommended by the Pittsgurgh Jaguar Club) for an engine rebuild. By the number of all the XK 120s, 140s, and 150s I saw in Jim's shop, it appears I found the right man for he job. As of this writing, the engine is still being reassembled and I hope to have both it and the coupe! back soon. Not really having spent much time with the car yet, I've had to quiz Jim on it's condition. He reports to me that the car is "solid." Hopefully summer will give me and the E a little time to get to know one another. More later.
