Lot 423at the Dorotheum Auction Sale of Classic Cars at Classic Expo Halle in Salzburg on 15 October 2016. Sold for 73,000 euros. Abbreviated catalogue description below.

A resident of Voralberg acquired this E Type roadster for his uncle, an embroidery manufacturer in the USA. When the car was brought to Austria in 1991, it was in the visually beautiful condition we see today. This E Type was unbelievably well maintained, only receiving a new paint job. A the time the speedometer had 16,500 miles on the clock according to the nephew. After the death of the uncle a pharmaceutical engineer acquired the vehicle with 19,700 miles on the clock.

He had Jaguar specialist Alfred Steitzner overhaul the car mechanically for 12,000 euros. The E Type also got a new speedometer at the time. He registered the car and barely drove it, if at all; the car passed the years in a garage until it was awakened from its slumber. The wake up call cost 7,500 euros and now the freshly serviced, well maintained roadster is waiting for a new home - where it can be see more than the inside of a garage, hopefully!

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
